    Let the beat funk you up — music festival is big part of parade’s fun

    The Funk Parade is sort of a misnomer. While a raucous parade down U Street is certainly the eponymous moment of the day, the day-long event is as much free music festival as it is parade. The bands played at 12 stages and performance areas during the day and 15 venues into the night — and DC Focused photographers were at most of them.     On this day, it was the District of Funk

    U Street was all about the funk on Saturday — music, dancing in the street, drum lines and tens of thousands of people turning out for the all-day party and music fest known as the Funk Parade. The festival of funk took over the U Street corridor, as old and new DC came together to celebrate the city’s cultural heritage. The Mayor of Funk Town was even there throwing beads to cheering constituents, walking just a few hundred yards ahead of parade participants carrying a gigantic, inflatable joint.     Whirling with the Mevlevi — Celebrating Turkish culture

    This past Sunday, the Embassy of Turkey hosted a concert at The George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium featuring Ahmet Özhan, a Turkish classical/Sufi music singer followed by a Mevlevi Sema Ceremony. The Mevlevi are a fraternity of Sufis (Muslim mystics) founded in 1273 by the Sufi poet Mevlana Jelaleddin Rumi. The Mevlevi Sema is a devotional ceremony involving music and prayer. It is a structured ritual that represents a trust in the fraternal order, a person’s spiritual journey toward the discovery of Truth, and his ascent toward perfection and deeper understanding of God.     DC bids farewell to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia

      These are photos from Friday when Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s body was brought to the U.S. Supreme Court where it lay in repose overnight. His funeral was Saturday.
