#DCFocused Pic 5: A weekend to honor and remember

We’re big fans of storytelling and the images in today’s Pic 5 each do a remarkable job of telling the story about what Memorial Day in Washington, DC is about. Follow today’s contributors on Instagram at @minnie_ger, @ellievanhoutte, @nanagyesie, @pootie_ting and @wolfkann. To be featured in our Pic 5 selection, tag your photos #DCFocused. 1. On this day, it was the District of Funk

U Street was all about the funk on Saturday — music, dancing in the street, drum lines and tens of thousands of people turning out for the all-day party and music fest known as the Funk Parade. The festival of funk took over the U Street corridor, as old and new DC came together to celebrate the city’s cultural heritage. The Mayor of Funk Town was even there throwing beads to cheering constituents, walking just a few hundred yards ahead of parade participants carrying a gigantic, inflatable joint. The parade slogan, after all, was “roll your funk.” Spread along the corridor from the Howard Theater to 14th Street, the festival included…

Ultimate reach …. by Kevin Wolf

Gorgeous light and a fast shutter helped Kevin Wolf capture the above image of a Toronto Rush player stretching for the frisbee during Saturday’s match against the DC Breeze, one of two professional ultimate frisbee teams in the Washington metro area. Despite battling back to tie the game late, the Breeze lost in overtime 25-24. The two teams will rematch this weekend in Toronto. All images © Kevin Wolf. Our giant, expanding 2016 #CherryBlossomsDC Roundup

The cherry blossoms are back, which means it’s time once again for our super-sized cherry blossom photography roundup. Better than last year? You be the judge. But one thing that we will say based on the great contributions to the DC Focused flickr pool is that, perhaps (just perhaps), the reports of flickr’s death have been greatly exaggerated. Want to join the fun? Add your cherry blossom photo to our flickr pool. And be sure to check out the DC Focused Guide to Cherry Blossoms. Scenes from last night’s crazy storm

Wednesday’s violent storm ripped through the DMV right around rush hour, making it an ugly commute for a lot of folks. Of course, it also offered photographers a chance to capture some gripping images. Featured image, commute by Kevin Wolf is part of the DC Focused flickr pool. More images from the pool below. Weekend Focus: A boy, a dog and a marshmallow snowman

Our weekend photo roundup returns from our holiday break with a sweet mix of portraits, action, street, landscape and bokeh. As far as photo ops for this weekend, it’s time for the annual “no pants” ride on the Metro. It’s this Sunday at 3 p.m. on a Metro car near you. You’ve been warned. Weekend Focus: Light it up and other holiday activities

Enjoy the weekend, one of our favorites of the year — past the bustle of Thanksgiving and before everyone gets too wrapped up into preparing for the holiday season. If you’re looking for things to do this weekend, head to the waterfront to catch the 16th Annual Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. Weekend Focus: Winter is coming but, for now, enjoy this weather

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so that means it’s time for the National Harbor tree lighting on Saturday night. Of course. After all, in the immortal words of Ned Stark, “Winter Holiday Festivals are coming.” If you have an Instagram account, then you’ve probably been seeing the flood of photos in your feed this week from the Renwick Gallery. The photos have been amazing but now all of us who didn’t get invites to the pre-opening festivities can visit the Renwick, as well. And if you haven’t checked out FotoWeekDC, what are you waiting for? The week-long festival draws to close this weekend. Featured image, Sunset at the Martin Luther King…

Weekend Focus: Did you remember the 5th of November?

Million Mask March by Victoria Pickering   If you’re a photographer in the DMV, then you have absolutely no excuse for not getting to at least some of the FotoWeekDC festivities, which kicks off tonight with the annual bash at the former Spanish Ambassadors house. There’s also still some time to take advantage of this great map that Casey Trees put together showing some of the best tree-lined streets in the District. And if you’re looking for photo ops, head down to Side Yards 2015 on Saturday night. If you need to be persuaded, just read the description: “Three stages of entertainment will showcase the unusual talents of contortionists, magicians,…

    Weekend Focus: Our-creepy-mostly-monochrome Halloween edition

It’s funny how your frame of mind can influence how you see an image. Take today’s feature image, for example: A wonderful photo with great contrast, leading lines and light. However, when we put it into a Halloween context, it can be kind of creepy, right? The same might be said for a lot of today’s images if you approach them with that mood in mind. Leave us a message down below with what you see in some of these images. Meanwhile, this should be an epic weekend for photography with Halloween on Saturday and Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, on Sunday. The DC Focused Meetup group…

Weekend Focus: Foliage, golden light and an old car

We love days like this when we go through our flickr pool and find great images like these. It makes us want to go out and take pictures. Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon offers some great morning light and the drama of runners pushing themselves to their limits. There’s also plenty of Halloween related photo-ops, including the Silver Spring Zombie Walk on Saturday. And if blood and guts isn’t your thing, the cuteness factor will be pumped up at Shaw Dog Park that morning for Howl-O-Ween. Weekend Focus: Getting ready for Pope-ageddon

Are you ready for next week? Have you stocked up on non-perishables? Made sure that you have bottled water on hand? You might want to spend the weekend battening down the hatches. Meanwhile, Joint Base Andrews will be hosting its air show on Saturday. And hey, if fighting the crowds at the air show isn’t enough warm-up for our papal visit, head over to H Street for the annual festival, where you can practice advanced crowd maneuvers.
