    Tips on photographing buildings

As we are in the middle of our self-declared Brutalism Week (details on it), we wanted to share some tips on how to take interesting photographs of buildings. 1. Go for something different Most buildings in D.C. have been photographed thousands of times.  For a different photo, look for an interesting juxtapostion, like Rob Cannon did when photographing the historic Franklin School: or this capture by Beau Finley:   2. It’s all in the details Building details can make great compositions:   3. Add people People can add interest or a sense of scale when photographing buildings: Or add pigeons:   4. Look for reflections There are often interesting reflections…

Get ready for a blizzard of snow photos

So, it begins — the avalanche of snow photos in our flickr feed. We can’t wait. Remember to stay safe and warm! And if you’re on Instagram, be sure to tag your photos #dcfocused_snow to enter our Snomaggedon 2016 Photo Contest. Featured image, Snow Train by Rob Cannon is part of our flickr pool. Weekend Focus: It’s Bei Bei Time!

We’re no strangers to celebrity sightings in the District. We don’t bat an eye when we see Barack and Joe scarfing down half smokes at Ben’s. The Big Papa in his Fiat? That’s nice. Ovie out and about? Yawn. Yeah, none of those celebs have anything on Bei Bei, the giant panda cub who makes his public debut on Saturday at the National Zoo. Grab your camera and get down to Woodley Park, though you might have better luck getting interesting shots of the crowd than actually seeing Bei Bei. There are also plenty of events around town to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Remember to tag your MLK weekend…

Weekend Focus: Light it up and other holiday activities

Enjoy the weekend, one of our favorites of the year — past the bustle of Thanksgiving and before everyone gets too wrapped up into preparing for the holiday season. If you’re looking for things to do this weekend, head to the waterfront to catch the 16th Annual Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. Weekend Focus: Our-creepy-mostly-monochrome Halloween edition

It’s funny how your frame of mind can influence how you see an image. Take today’s feature image, for example: A wonderful photo with great contrast, leading lines and light. However, when we put it into a Halloween context, it can be kind of creepy, right? The same might be said for a lot of today’s images if you approach them with that mood in mind. Leave us a message down below with what you see in some of these images. Meanwhile, this should be an epic weekend for photography with Halloween on Saturday and Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, on Sunday. The DC Focused Meetup group…

Weekend Focus: Foliage, golden light and an old car

We love days like this when we go through our flickr pool and find great images like these. It makes us want to go out and take pictures. Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon offers some great morning light and the drama of runners pushing themselves to their limits. There’s also plenty of Halloween related photo-ops, including the Silver Spring Zombie Walk on Saturday. And if blood and guts isn’t your thing, the cuteness factor will be pumped up at Shaw Dog Park that morning for Howl-O-Ween. Weekend Focus: Shadows, landscapes and a smoking lady

Thank you restaurant week for taking our minds off of how horrible the DC Metro has become — if only for a few moments. If you’re looking to get out of town for an interesting photo op, you might consider heading over to Frederick, Maryland to check out the water lilies. Meanwhile, just one more month of summer left. We can do this. Featured image, Smoking a Butt by Geoff Livingston, is part of the DC Focused flickr pool. More images from the pool below. Weekend Focus: She was all legs (plus Roy takes a selfie)

While we usually celebrate Star Wars Day on May 4th, we’re down with the Washington Nationals doing it this Sunday for the home game against the Dodgers (cue the Darth Vader theme music).  This also might be the weekend to head up to Baltimore and take in the annual Artscape festival. Weekend Focus: Passing through the wormhole

Weekend Focus: Metro moments, Jessica Alba and National Mall sunrises

We’ve long had a love-hate relationship with DC’s Metro. Stories like this one in the WaPo don’t make us feel any better that we’ll unsuck the Metro anytime soon. But we’re eternal optimists and hope that some day we’ll have a subway system worthy of the City Beautiful. Just a few years ago who would have ever thought Jessica Alba would be hanging out on 14th Street? Featured image, Crowded Metro Center by Kevin Wolf, is part of the DC Focused flickr pool. Memorial Day, Union Station by Jordan Barab

On scorchers like today, we salute the summer tourists. No matter how irritated we might get with them standing on the left side of the escalator or blocking the door to the train, we can’t help but salute them for dragging themselves around town in this heat. Summer tourist, this Bud’s for you. Featured photo, Memorial Day, Union Station by Jordan Barab, is part of the DC Focused flickr pool.
