    Snowbirds Invade

Yesterday, around 12:25 p.m., the Snowbirds put on a short demonstration over the District.  The Snowbirds are Canada’s equivalent of the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds; they’re a flight demonstration team that brings “thrilling performances to the North American public.”  A number of DC Focused photographers managed to take some fantastic shots of the Snowbirds’ two passes over the city.  Here are some of the best that were added to the DC Focused Flickr pool.

Our giant, expanding 2016 #CherryBlossomsDC Roundup

The cherry blossoms are back, which means it’s time once again for our super-sized cherry blossom photography roundup. Better than last year? You be the judge. But one thing that we will say based on the great contributions to the DC Focused flickr pool is that, perhaps (just perhaps), the reports of flickr’s death have been greatly exaggerated. Want to join the fun? Add your cherry blossom photo to our flickr pool. And be sure to check out the DC Focused Guide to Cherry Blossoms. Weekend Focus: Flight of the birds, snow caps and a urinal

Hopefully, you’re surviving winter’s last gasp. Hang in there. Warm weather and spring is just around the corner. If you’re in Virginia and looking for events to photograph, you can get an early start on the St. Patrick’s Day festivities with Alexandria’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. And not to be out done, Annapolis is hosting its own Irish Festival. Featured image, Navy Yard – Old 933 by Brian Mosley, is part of the DC Focused flickr pool. More images from the pool below. Weekend Focus: Saying farewell

Somewhat lost in the aftermath and digging out from Snowzilla this week was the passing of Concepcion Picciotto, who had held her peace vigil in front of the White House since 1981. If you’ve photographed the front of the White House, then you’ve seen her ramshackle tent and protest signs calling for world peace and nuclear disarmament. Ms. Picciotto died Jan. 25 at a facility run by N Street Village. We’re not likely to see someone with her perseverance pass our way again. RIP Concepion Picciotto. Featured image, RIP Connie by Bill, is part of the DC Focused flickr pool. More images from the pool below. [divider line_type=”Small Line” custom_height=””]…

Go, go, go #Snowzilla! Scenes from a blizzard Act 1

Snowzilla rules the city. Might as well just hunker down and chill. Here are some photos from the DC Focused community. Weekend Focus: It’s Bei Bei Time!

We’re no strangers to celebrity sightings in the District. We don’t bat an eye when we see Barack and Joe scarfing down half smokes at Ben’s. The Big Papa in his Fiat? That’s nice. Ovie out and about? Yawn. Yeah, none of those celebs have anything on Bei Bei, the giant panda cub who makes his public debut on Saturday at the National Zoo. Grab your camera and get down to Woodley Park, though you might have better luck getting interesting shots of the crowd than actually seeing Bei Bei. There are also plenty of events around town to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Remember to tag your MLK weekend…

Should old acquaintance be forgot: A look back at our favorite images of 2015

2015 was an amazing year for photography in DC — from historic moments seen by millions to those little moments like the one above that you just happen upon. We asked members of the DC Focused community to show us their favorite images from the last year and to tell us why. What they showed us drives home a point that we believe is at the heart of why so many of us love photography. Our favorite images are often more than beautiful photos — they show us a deeper connection between photograph and photographer. It’s the moment that really matters — it’s how capturing that image made us feel at the time and how the…

    Catharsis on the Mall

This weekend, The Catharsis on the Mall: A Vigil for Healing the Drug War took place on the grounds of the Washington Monument. The Temple of Essence was constructed to honor those harmed in the drug war, and was burned on Saturday night at midnight. Here’s how the temple looked shortly before the burning started: Once lit, it quickly caught fire: As it burned, the memorial words and images on the temple went up in flames as the sides of the temple collapsed. When the sides of the temple had fallen, a symbolic prison cell was visible inside. Here are two images taken by Paul Sirajuddin, showing the fire from…

    Weekend Focus: Just hanging out

Another weekend, another selection of great photos from our DC photo community. Should be another great weekend of photo ops. Justice or Else is rallying on the National Mall on Saturday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March, Taste of DC once again takes over Pennsylvania Avenue and the Army Ten Miler is off and running again on Sunday morning. Weekend Focus: the ready-for-weekend-edition

[Editor’s note: Yeah, we’re not very good at reading calendars and we’re very preoccupied at the moment with other things so an earlier version of this totally miffed when the Labor Day weekend begins. Wishful thinking, we guess.] We’ve packed our roundup with a couple extra photos this week, which is another way of saying there were just too many fantastic images to choose from. If you’re looking for something to photograph this weekend, check out the annual Capital Dragon Boat Races on the Georgetown Waterfont. It’s also the opening weekend of the Maryland Renaissance Festival. Featured image, I can do reflections by Kevin Wolf, is part of the…
