Getting their kicks in the Stonewall league

Kickball is wild fun as you can see from these photos from Stonewall’s recent All Star and Championship tournaments. Seriously, if there’s a way to have more fun with a big red, bouncy ball, someone let us know. All images © John Jack Gallagher. You can see more of his work on his website and Facebook page.

Bocce ball in Logan Circle with the Stonewall League

[nectar_dropcap color=””]C [/nectar_dropcap]olorful, matching t-shirt?  A smooth, steady throwing motion with the ability to impart either a forward or backward spin? Team name that incorporates a witty innuendo or pun, preferably with the word “ball” in there? If so, then you’re probably at Logan Circle on a Thursday night. The Stonewall Bocce League, now in its 10th season, plays at the circle on Thursday nights. The bocce league is part of the Stonewall Sports League, which since its founding in 2010 has grown to have leagues in 10 different cities. In addition to bocce, in DC, Stonewall Sports offers billiards, darts, dodgeball, and kickball. Should old acquaintance be forgot: A look back at our favorite images of 2015

2015 was an amazing year for photography in DC — from historic moments seen by millions to those little moments like the one above that you just happen upon. We asked members of the DC Focused community to show us their favorite images from the last year and to tell us why. What they showed us drives home a point that we believe is at the heart of why so many of us love photography. Our favorite images are often more than beautiful photos — they show us a deeper connection between photograph and photographer. It’s the moment that really matters — it’s how capturing that image made us feel at the time and how the…

Weekend Focus: Winter is coming but, for now, enjoy this weather

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so that means it’s time for the National Harbor tree lighting on Saturday night. Of course. After all, in the immortal words of Ned Stark, “Winter Holiday Festivals are coming.” If you have an Instagram account, then you’ve probably been seeing the flood of photos in your feed this week from the Renwick Gallery. The photos have been amazing but now all of us who didn’t get invites to the pre-opening festivities can visit the Renwick, as well. And if you haven’t checked out FotoWeekDC, what are you waiting for? The week-long festival draws to close this weekend. Featured image, Sunset at the Martin Luther King…

Dancing above the skyline — crane style

When you think of dancing cranes, there’s certain images that come to mind. Construction cranes moving in a synchronized ballet above the skyline might not be on that list. Of course, that’s the kind of event we might expect the Capital Fringe Festival to deliver, which they did earlier this week. From the description of the event: As the performance progresses, the accompanying ambient music will echo through the streets, creating the sensation that the entire city is the stage for this complex performance and immersing the audience within the spectacle. Repurposing these utilitarian machines as the star performers in a delicate dance, creates the opportunity to forever change…

Vintage WWII aircraft take a victory lap over DC

Just past high noon on Friday, a makeshift squadron of World War II-era fighters and bombers flew across the National Mall to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe. The Arsenal of Democracy flyover brought out thousands of spectators, including many DC Focused contributors. Be sure to click the links to see higher resolution versions of the images. Weekend Focus: After the bloom

We survived another cherry blossom season. For the blossoms that gave us such great photos this past week, we salute you. And with the blossoms falling and the multitudes departing, it’s time to wander down to the National Mall for the Earth Day Concert, where you shouldn’t expect any crowds at all. Or not. The great, expanding #CherryBlossomDC roundup

Whether you love going down to the tidal basin for cherry blossoms, or you stay as far away from the crowds and traffic as you can, it will all be over soon enough. Fortunately, we’ll have these terrific photos to last us all year long. We’ll be updating this post throughout the week as new photos find their way to the DC Focused flickr pool. Weekend Focus: Rock’n and Roll’n into spring

Two big events this weekend will surely draw a ton of shutterbugs into DC streets. The Rock ‘n’ Roll DC marathon, half marathon and 5k will take runners throughout DC on Saturday morning, ending at RFK Stadium. Be aware that there will be a bunch of street closures, so drive and park at your own risk. And if you take the Metro, well …. it’s the Metro. Here’s the course map (PDF).  If bag pipe players and river dancers are more your thing, head down to Constitution Avenue on Sunday for the 44th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  Featured image by Beau Finley is part of the DC Focused flickr pool.…
