    Hobnobbing with Gargoyles

On Saturday evening, Exposed DC and Washington National Cathedral hosted Gutters & Gargoyles, a behind-the-scenes photo op into some of the hidden corners of the Cathedral not typically open to the public. Several DC Focused photographers were on hand for the fun, capturing the Cathedral from a variety of angles. Feature image © 2016 angela n.   Gargoyles & Grotesques As Victoria Pickering noted in a post from last year, many of the 112 stone figures that adorn the Cathedral aren’t gargoyles at all. Technically, they’re grotesques. Grotesques are decorative figures while gargoyles incorporate water spouts that protect the building from water damage. Still, whatever you call them, these critters…

At 100 years old, the National Park Service is looking marvelous

To celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the creation of the National Park Service, we asked members of the DC Focused photography community to share their favorite image and memory from a national park. Of course, some of our members were quick to point out that the NPS does far more than manage America’ 59 national parks. It also oversees many national monuments, historic places and, of course, the National Mall here in D.C. While the images are stunning, what we love about these photos are the memories they evoke and the emotions associated with them. To the men and women who help protect and preserve our shared heritage, thank you…

Our #DCFocused_tinyshot challenge proves it’s a small, small world, after all

[nectar_dropcap color=””]O [/nectar_dropcap]ur photography challenge this month was inspired by Lorie Shaull’s miniature figurine photo shoot, which, in turn, was inspired by Slinkachu’s The Little People Project. The challenge was to grab an action figure, toy or trinket and get creative with forced perspective, bokeh and depth of field. There’s almost no way not to have fun with this challenge, which is obvious from the responses to this assignment. Here are some of our favorites, which were posted in the DC Focused Facebook group. 1. Scenes from last night’s crazy storm

Wednesday’s violent storm ripped through the DMV right around rush hour, making it an ugly commute for a lot of folks. Of course, it also offered photographers a chance to capture some gripping images. Featured image, commute by Kevin Wolf is part of the DC Focused flickr pool. More images from the pool below. The District Strikes back!

We survived the Great Blizzard of 2016. Now, it’s time to dig out and get back to work. Okay, maybe work can wait another day or two, but our intrepid DC Focused photographers never rest. Here’s our final installment of Snowzilla vs. the DMV. Weekend Focus: It’s Bei Bei Time!

We’re no strangers to celebrity sightings in the District. We don’t bat an eye when we see Barack and Joe scarfing down half smokes at Ben’s. The Big Papa in his Fiat? That’s nice. Ovie out and about? Yawn. Yeah, none of those celebs have anything on Bei Bei, the giant panda cub who makes his public debut on Saturday at the National Zoo. Grab your camera and get down to Woodley Park, though you might have better luck getting interesting shots of the crowd than actually seeing Bei Bei. There are also plenty of events around town to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Remember to tag your MLK weekend…

Weekend Focus: A boy, a dog and a marshmallow snowman

Our weekend photo roundup returns from our holiday break with a sweet mix of portraits, action, street, landscape and bokeh. As far as photo ops for this weekend, it’s time for the annual “no pants” ride on the Metro. It’s this Sunday at 3 p.m. on a Metro car near you. You’ve been warned. Weekend Focus: Light it up and other holiday activities

Enjoy the weekend, one of our favorites of the year — past the bustle of Thanksgiving and before everyone gets too wrapped up into preparing for the holiday season. If you’re looking for things to do this weekend, head to the waterfront to catch the 16th Annual Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. Weekend Focus: the city at night, jumbo crabs and placid waters

Holiday festival season continues to rev up this weekend with the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade kicking off at 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Silver Spring. If you’re up for a drive, head over to Gettysburg, instead, for the Remembrance Day Parade at 1 p.m. on Saturday and the graveside illumination ceremony that evening. You can also check out the Catharsis on the Mall:  A Vigil for Healing the Drug Wars, which kicks off Friday night on the northwest side of the Washington Monument and continues until Sunday morning with testimonials, music, dancing and the burning of a wooden temple at 11 p.m. on Saturday night.
