Día de los Muertos: A time to remember

The DC Focused Meetup group had a pretty simple assignment on Sunday — tell the story of the Día de Muertos Festival in Mount Pleasant. Simple enough, except with a couple conditions: Each person could use only a 50mm fixed focal length lens. No zooms allowed. And to make things a little more difficult, they had to turn in photos that were uncropped. They needed to show the world what they saw through their viewfinders when they snapped the shutter. The idea behind the challenge was to force the group members to be deliberate as they approached their shots. No zoom meant, in many cases, that they needed to move…

    Weekend Focus: Fair warning

We’re in for some freezing temps this weekend. Not that we’re complaining but it’s going to make for a chilly morning for our DC Focused Meetup this Sunday at the Marine Corps War Memorial. With Halloween around the corner, time to read this guide to haunted houses or, if you’re looking for another seasonal photo op check out this handy map to the region’s pumpkin patches.       The past couple weeks have offerred up some terrific photo opportunities. From the Pope, to the big moon, to photo walks to, Art All Night and Feista DC, it’s been non-stop. Here’s hoping you got out with your camera and captured some great images. If you look closely at today’s featured image, you’ll notice that something ain’t right with that astronaut. You can find out more about this photo project here. Speaking of the Metro, be sure to check out the Washingtonian’s guide to snarky Metro bashers. Weekend Focus: Beautiful images for your weekend

We’re sure there was a lot going on in the world this past week but could there have been anything bigger than the news that Trader Joe’s is coming to Capitol Hill? You would think not, judging from the shrieks of joy heard from H Street to Barracks Row. But do the people in Cap Hill really need a TJ’s? They already have Eastern Market and Trusty’s, which makes us envious enough. Speaking of, we think that if at least one of these bars on BYT’s “Least Douchey Bars in DC,” isn’t in your rotation, well, as our lawyer friends say, res ipsa loquitur. In Celebration of Travel: Dispatches from around the globe

Southern California’s Venice Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world, and one of the best places in the world to people watch. [divider line_type=”Small Line” custom_height=””]While this blog’s focus is squarely on life in the District, this week, we’re broadening our horizons. It’s Travel Week here at DC Focused. We’re big believers in getting out of town whenever we can, whether it’s a short trip up the coast or somewhere halfway around the globe. Throughout the week, our contributors will be posting some…

Weekend Focus: We’re doing the double double Dutch

This is one of those days where we really appreciate DC’s amazing photography community. The photos in our flickr pool were amazing. The featured image is actually a self portrait that frequent contributor Zack Lewkowicz did at the Lincoln memorial. Here’s his description: “This is a back facing self portrait I took last night behind the Lincoln Memorial. To the left is the Arlington Memorial bridge and to the right is Rosslyn,VA. I used a 10s shutter release to give me time to jump down from Lincoln and get in frame. Then I stood still for 20s to get the full exposure. I can’t believe how well this turned…

Weekend Focus: She was all legs (plus Roy takes a selfie)

While we usually celebrate Star Wars Day on May 4th, we’re down with the Washington Nationals doing it this Sunday for the home game against the Dodgers (cue the Darth Vader theme music).  This also might be the weekend to head up to Baltimore and take in the annual Artscape festival. Weekend Focus: Bugs, big boats and beautiful sunsets

We hope you’ve rested up because it’s the weekend, and not just any weekend, but Capital Pride weekend. But before you do anything else, be sure to check out Victoria’s tips on shooting Saturday’s Pride Parade in DuPont Circle. You can see the schedule of events here. The question that is weighing heavily on our minds is whether there’s enough time this weekend to photograph the parade and festival and still make it up to Bawlmer for Hon Fest. Life is cruel. Also, if you were one of the lucky few who scored a ticket to the Prince concert at the Warner Theater on Sunday, take a picture for us, will…

Weekend Focus: Getting down with dandelions

So how does the old wives tale go? If you can blow all of the seeds off a dandelion in one breath your wish comes true? It’s the weekend, take a deep breath and give it your best shot. What will you wish for? Of course, with it also being Horton Hears a Who Day, you might want to listen closely before you blow.
