    Art All Night x 7

Last Saturday’s Art All Night wasn’t just one celebration — it was, in fact, seven-in-one. Seven neighborhoods hosted events, and a group of DC Focused photographers tag teamed to better chronicle the evening. We saw art and artists, of course, along with musicians, dancers, hula hoopers, and selfie-taking revelers, all bathed in the shimmering light of DC at night. Feature image © 2016 Victoria Pickering   First Things First: The Art More than anything, Art All Night is about the art. I mean, it’s right their in its first name. The festival gave local artists a chance to display their work before huge crowds, educate people and, perhaps, sell some…

    The swimming of the dogs

After America celebrates Labor Day and the kids are back in school, after the last boiiing of a spring board launching a teen diver, after the last squeals of a toddler joyfully splashing water, and after the last lap has been swum and all the pools shuddered for the year, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation re-opens its Community Pools for one more day… to dogs. Saturday, September 10, was Dog Swim day at the DC community pools. Model-in-residence Imi and I packed a towel, some sunscreen and a couple of lenses (of course), and headed to the Francis Community Center Pool in the nearby West End neighborhood of…

Let the beat funk you up — music festival is big part of parade’s fun

The Funk Parade is sort of a misnomer. While a raucous parade down U Street is certainly the eponymous moment of the day, the day-long event is as much free music festival as it is parade. The bands played at 12 stages and performance areas during the day and 15 venues into the night — and DC Focused photographers were at most of them. Are you ready for the funk? Annual U Street parade and festival returns

Although the Funk Parade is just in its third year, it has already become one the District’s marquee cultural events. The all-day celebration pays homage to the U Street corridor’s rich musical and cultural heritage. This year, the DC Focused community is proud to be part of the event as the official photographers of the parade and musical acts. So, it’s fitting that we look at some of our favorite images from last year’s Funk Parade and talk about things to consider if you’re planning to photograph this  year’s event. All images are part of the DC Focused flickr pool. 1. Jeffrey Morris | Work the angles   Jeffrey got low on this photo, which produces…

Celebrating Prince’s life and music with an impromptu U Street dance party

[nectar_dropcap color=””]O [/nectar_dropcap]ne of my favorite things about living in a city like Washington are the spontaneous celebrations, protests or memorials that happen around big, emotional events. So, it was fitting that after Thursday’s news that Prince had passed away, people would gather to remember the legendary musician who gave us such amazing music over parts of five decades. But the hundreds who showed up at the corner of U and 14th streets didn’t come to mourn his passing as much to celebrate what his music meant to them with an impromptu dance party. It was cathartic. As the organizers wrote on Facebook: “We need to sweat out these tears!”…

Ballet and photography come together in a study of styles

I had the opportunity last weekend to photograph DC’s Classical Repertory Dance Ensemble. The evening included a program that presented a mix of dance styles centered around both classical and contemporary ballet. In the same way, the photographs included in the current post and Featured Gallery present a mixture of photographic styles from classic representational, contemporary high dynamic, and artistic finishes approaching impressionism. View the full gallery. All images © Jeffrey Morris. See more of his work on Jeffrey Morris Photography. You can follow him on Instagram at @jeffreyindc. The District Strikes back!

We survived the Great Blizzard of 2016. Now, it’s time to dig out and get back to work. Okay, maybe work can wait another day or two, but our intrepid DC Focused photographers never rest. Here’s our final installment of Snowzilla vs. the DMV. Weekend Focus: Did you remember the 5th of November?

Million Mask March by Victoria Pickering   If you’re a photographer in the DMV, then you have absolutely no excuse for not getting to at least some of the FotoWeekDC festivities, which kicks off tonight with the annual bash at the former Spanish Ambassadors house. There’s also still some time to take advantage of this great map that Casey Trees put together showing some of the best tree-lined streets in the District. And if you’re looking for photo ops, head down to Side Yards 2015 on Saturday night. If you need to be persuaded, just read the description: “Three stages of entertainment will showcase the unusual talents of contortionists, magicians,…
