Weekend Focus: Smile like it’s Friday (because it is)

It’s Memorial Day weekend and you’re either out of town at the shore or some other wonderful location enjoying the tranquility. Or you’re here, where peace and quiet will be in short supply. It’s that weekend of the year where thousands upon thousands of motorcycles, each apparently with their mufflers removed, descend on the district. Well, at least our friends at the Capital Weather gang are predicting that we’re going to have amazing weather this weekend. We suppose it’s better to have Rolling Thunder in town than actual thunder. Featured image, happy, muddy child, by Kevin Wolf is part of the DC Focused flickr pool. More photos from the…

Weekend Focus: Thawing out with lion dancing, roller derby

It’s going to be downright balmy this weekend. Maybe a little rain. Maybe a little snow. But these ridiculous arctic temperatures should be behind us. So what are the best bets for photos this weekend? Probably tops on the list is the annual Lunar New Year celebration in Chinatown on Saturday Sunday. The parade starts at 2 p.m. at 6th and I Streets NW and ends at the stage at 6th and H Streets NW, where traditional lion dancing is scheduled for 3 p.m. But if standing out in the cold isn’t your idea of fun, head over to the Armory on Saturday and check out the DC Rollergirls. The Friday Rewind

This is the most confusing time of year. Heavy coat or sweater? Should we pull the scarf and gloves out of storage or thumb our nose at the dipping temperatures? These are things we’ll ponder this weekend, maybe even at the National Gallery of Art’s skating rink, which opens today for the season. Otherwise, we’re busy preparing for a relaunch of DC Focused with a new emphasis on profiles of some the people who make this city such a great place to live. Stay tuned. The Friday Rewind

It’s Friday and we hope you’re laughing like this guy. If you’re looking for things to photograph this weekend, there’s a great chance to work on your music photography at the Adams Morgan Porch Fest on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.. You can pick up a map on Saturday from the info booth at 18th Street N.W. and Columbia Road and get more details on the event Facebook page. Or if you like parades — and who doesn’t love a parade? — ┬áhead down to Howard University on Saturday morning for the homecoming parade. More photos posted to our flickr pool from the last week after the jump.…

    ‘the river’ by Chris

This almost surreal view of the Key Bridge over the Potomac River was taken Thursday but looks like it could have been pulled from a history book. The Francis Scott Key Bridge, as it’s formally known, was completed in 1923. Image by Chris is part of the DC Focused flickr pool.

    ‘wolftrapping’ by Chris

This picture is just dripping awesomeness. Not sure whether it’s a set up or one of those moments where you just thank your lucky stars that you had your camera ready. In this case, Chris captured this scene at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia with his iPhone 5. We love Wolf Trap, by the way. You can bring a picnic basket and bottle of wine and listen to performers who are on the other side of their peak years but still put up terrific shows. Featured image by Chris.
