You don’t need fancy gear to participate in the 500px Global Photo Walk — a camera phone and a passion for photography will do. Photographers in more than 140 cities around the world — including Washington, DC — will be hitting the streets on Sept. 6 to make beautiful images.
I’ll be leading the photo walk in DC and I’m personally inviting you to come out and join us. You can RSVP on our Facebook event page or if you don’t do Facebook, just show up. All ages, cameras and skill levels are welcome. And if you’ve never been on a photo walk, don’t worry, neither have I. So we’ve got that going for us.
The route details are at the bottom of this post (We’re gathering at the Smithsonian Metro Stop on Sept. 6 at 2:45 p.m.). The official theme of the walk is “patterns.” How you interpret that is entirely up to you. I tried to pick locations that give us a variety of photographic opportunities. But really, it’s what you make of it. If you’re a street photographer, there will be plenty of people on the National Mall and downtown to photograph. If you’re into macro photography, there will be no shortage of interesting details to focus on. If you’re a portrait photographer, grab one of your fellow walkers (or stop a stranger) and have them strike a pose.
If you’re an experienced photographer, come share your knowledge. If you’re a beginner, now’s a great chance to ask some questions.
At the end of the walk, we’ll have a drawing for a $25 B&H gift card courtesy of DC Focused and a “100 years of Leica” t-shirt courtesy of our friends at the Leica Store DC, who have kindly provided us with the shirt (size large). Check out their website.
But the fun doesn’t end there.
After (and during) the photo walk, share your photos across your social networks and tag them #WeAre500px #500pxDC #DCFocused. And be sure to upload your best ones to 500px. If you don’t have a 500px account, you can set one up for free. And while you’re at it, you can upload some to the DC Focused group on that other photo sharing site, as well.
We’ll publish a round-up of photos from that day here on DC Focused. Hope to see you at the photo walk!
[Update: has created a DC “group” on their site for folks to upload their photos after Saturday’s Gloal Photo Walk. The photo from the event that has the most votes will win the photographer a free 500px “awesome” account. You can join the group here.]
