Weekend Focus: Flight of the birds, snow caps and a urinal

Hopefully, you’re surviving winter’s last gasp. Hang in there. Warm weather and spring is just around the corner. If you’re in Virginia and looking for events to photograph, you can get an early start on the St. Patrick’s Day festivities with Alexandria’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. And not to be out done, Annapolis is hosting its own Irish Festival. Featured image, Navy Yard – Old 933 by Brian Mosley, is part of the DC Focused flickr pool. More images from the pool below. Weekend Focus: Our special Leap Year edition

We have no idea what the forecast is this weekend (we’ve reached our limit of free WaPo stories and can’t check Capital Weather Gang until next month) but we’d recommend you grab your warmest coat if you head outside. The H Street Trolley is supposed to carry its first passengers on Saturday and that can only mean that a certain place is about to freeze over. We’ll believe it when we see it. Weekend Focus: Saying farewell

Somewhat lost in the aftermath and digging out from Snowzilla this week was the passing of Concepcion Picciotto, who had held her peace vigil in front of the White House since 1981. If you’ve photographed the front of the White House, then you’ve seen her ramshackle tent and protest signs calling for world peace and nuclear disarmament. Ms. Picciotto died Jan. 25 at a facility run by N Street Village. We’re not likely to see someone with her perseverance pass our way again. RIP Concepion Picciotto. Get ready for a blizzard of snow photos

So, it begins — the avalanche of snow photos in our flickr feed. We can’t wait. Remember to stay safe and warm! And if you’re on Instagram, be sure to tag your photos #dcfocused_snow to enter our Snomaggedon 2016 Photo Contest. Featured image, Snow Train by Rob Cannon is part of our flickr pool. Weekend Focus: It’s Bei Bei Time!

We’re no strangers to celebrity sightings in the District. We don’t bat an eye when we see Barack and Joe scarfing down half smokes at Ben’s. The Big Papa in his Fiat? That’s nice. Ovie out and about? Yawn. Yeah, none of those celebs have anything on Bei Bei, the giant panda cub who makes his public debut on Saturday at the National Zoo. Grab your camera and get down to Woodley Park, though you might have better luck getting interesting shots of the crowd than actually seeing Bei Bei. There are also plenty of events around town to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Remember to tag your MLK weekend…

Weekend Focus: A boy, a dog and a marshmallow snowman

Our weekend photo roundup returns from our holiday break with a sweet mix of portraits, action, street, landscape and bokeh. As far as photo ops for this weekend, it’s time for the annual “no pants” ride on the Metro. It’s this Sunday at 3 p.m. on a Metro car near you. You’ve been warned. Should old acquaintance be forgot: A look back at our favorite images of 2015

2015 was an amazing year for photography in DC — from historic moments seen by millions to those little moments like the one above that you just happen upon. We asked members of the DC Focused community to show us their favorite images from the last year and to tell us why. What they showed us drives home a point that we believe is at the heart of why so many of us love photography. Our favorite images are often more than beautiful photos — they show us a deeper connection between photograph and photographer. It’s the moment that really matters — it’s how capturing that image made us feel at the time and how the…

Weekend Focus: Light it up and other holiday activities

Enjoy the weekend, one of our favorites of the year — past the bustle of Thanksgiving and before everyone gets too wrapped up into preparing for the holiday season. If you’re looking for things to do this weekend, head to the waterfront to catch the 16th Annual Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. Weekend Focus: the city at night, jumbo crabs and placid waters

Holiday festival season continues to rev up this weekend with the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade kicking off at 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Silver Spring. If you’re up for a drive, head over to Gettysburg, instead, for the Remembrance Day Parade at 1 p.m. on Saturday and the graveside illumination ceremony that evening. You can also check out the Catharsis on the Mall:  A Vigil for Healing the Drug Wars, which kicks off Friday night on the northwest side of the Washington Monument and continues until Sunday morning with testimonials, music, dancing and the burning of a wooden temple at 11 p.m. on Saturday night. Weekend Focus: Winter is coming but, for now, enjoy this weather

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so that means it’s time for the National Harbor tree lighting on Saturday night. Of course. After all, in the immortal words of Ned Stark, “Winter Holiday Festivals are coming.” If you have an Instagram account, then you’ve probably been seeing the flood of photos in your feed this week from the Renwick Gallery. The photos have been amazing but now all of us who didn’t get invites to the pre-opening festivities can visit the Renwick, as well. And if you haven’t checked out FotoWeekDC, what are you waiting for? The week-long festival draws to close this weekend. Featured image, Sunset at the Martin Luther King…
