Finding pain and joy on Kill Hill #RnRDC

Shoreham Hill is about six miles into the Rock ‘n’ Roll DC Marathon (& 1/2 marathon) route — the part of Rock Creek Parkway that curves behind the Omni Shoreham. It’s a bitch. Which, of course, means it’s also a great place to shoot photos of people with painful grimaces on their faces. One runner blogged that it’s nicknamed “Kill Hill,” though I have no idea if anyone else actually calls it that.

But if running up Kill Hill wasn’t enough to make you miserable, there was Saturday morning’s steady drizzle. The only thing that’s hard to figure out is why a lot of the runners coming up the hill were smiling. Runners are a strange breed.

Granted, they had cheerleaders to help them make it to the top. Volunteers with the nonprofit organization Wear Blue: Run to Remember lined the hill, encouraging runners and urging them onward. Members of the group run to honor our fallen troops, the families and those in the miliary.

Hey thanks for the shout out 🙂 I know those runner expressions in your photos all too well. Yeesh. As far as “Kill Hill”… not the most imaginative of monikers, but I was warned about that portion of the race from a local runner who used that terminology. For whatever that’s worth. Cheers! -Matt
